breast reduction

Breast reduction reduces pain and increases confidence

While thousands of women seek cosmetic procedures for a fuller cleavage, many want to reduce their size with breast reduction surgery. Breast hypertrophy (over sized breasts) can cause severe muscle pain and long-term health issues that can be significantly improved with surgery. Medical tourism agency Gorgeous Getaways has helped hundreds of women to plan breast reduction surgery, with award winning medical facilities in Phuket, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.
Difficulties caused by breast hypertrophy
Under the strain of heavy over sized breasts routine activities can become painful and uncomfortable. Women can also find their professional and social lives impacted, as they become targets for unwanted attention and even harassment because of the size of their breasts. Common problems include:
  • Neck, shoulder and back pain
  • Discomfort from straining bra straps
  • Rashes under the breast
  • Difficulty finding large bra sizes and clothes
  • Headaches
  • Numbness or tingling in the fingers
  • Unwanted attention
  • Self-consciousness
  • Depression
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Loss of confidence
  • Difficulty exercising
Breast reduction surgery
Breast reduction surgery aims to remove breast fat, tissue and skin to create smaller, firmer and lighter feeling breasts. Once the breasts have had time to settle (approximately two months) they will be rounder in shape and easier to manage. As well as alleviating health problems, a breast reduction will create a more proportional body shape and symmetrical breasts. Surgeons can change the firmness and shape of the breast, and even reduce areola size. Often patients will receive liposuction to the hips or stomach for a more balanced overall result.
Preparation for surgery
Your consultation with a cosmetic surgeon will include questions about medical history and current medications. It is important to be completely honest about every aspect of your health so the surgeon can decide on the best and safest surgical plan. Before booking your surgical consult remember to:
  • Provide accurate and honest medical information
  • Research benefits and risks of procedure
  • Prepare a list of questions and concerns
  • Clarify your expectations- tell the surgeon exactly what you expect from the results.
Overview of breast reduction procedure
Directly before surgery your doctor will make markings on the breast indicating where the incisions will be made. Markings will be around and above the areola, below the nipple and underneath the breast crease. During the procedure the surgeon removes excess tissue and overstretched suspensory ligaments before transposing the areola to higher position. The surgery will be carried out under general anesthetic and you will be required to stay overnight at the hospital. After the surgery stitches remain around the areola and nipple, underneath the nipple and under the breast.
Recovering from breast reduction surgery
Every individual will experience recovery differently, with varying levels of bruising and swelling. A surgical bra and prescribed pain relief will help to ease discomfort, but Asprin must be avoided as it can increase the risk of bleeding. Heavy lifting may cause swelling and pressure in the breasts, so is to be avoided for at least one month, although patients are able to return to other day to day activities within three weeks.

So, What’s The Difference Between Men’s And Women’s Skincare?

We’ve all seen the products emblazoned with the words ‘for men,’ but is there really a difference between men’s and women’s skincare? The AEDITION investigates.

By Amber Katz. Originally published at aedit.com

We all know about the pink tax when it comes to razors — and that cringeworthy “for her” pink pen campaign several years ago also comes to mind. The way women are marketed toward has certainly changed in the past few years, with an uptick in feminine care products like Thinx, a razor brand with imagery that shows women actually shaving off dark hair instead of the Gillette Venus razor ads of yore that featured women shaving smooth skin — that was already perfectly shaved.

The marketing in the deodorant aisle is similarly gendered. While women’s scents use language like “soft breeze,” men’s fragrances purport to smell of the dulcet tones of things like “winter tundra” screaming in all caps.

So, when it comes to skincare, are there actual differences between men’s and women’s products? Or is it all smoke and mirrors (i.e. marketing)? To find out, we talked to a dermatologist, cosmetic chemist, and the lead scientist at a brand that offers products for both genders.

The difference between men’s & women’s skincare products

Cosmetic chemist and beautystat.com founder Ron Robinson says there are big differences based on product aesthetics and skincare needs in men’s versus women’s product formulations. Nancy Ilaya, PhD, scientific director at Kiehl’s, says that texture and sensorial profiles differ between men’s and women’s ranges.

“Based on surveying the marketplace, men’s skincare products tend to be more functional in terms of packaging, regimen, ingredients, lighter weight in textures with more traditional formats – gels, gel creams, lotions; and masculine in terms of sensorial cues,” she says. “Men’s skin requires special care in the beard area as facial grooming can leave the area exposed to irritation from shaving and vulnerable to ingrown hairs.” She notes that in the Kiehl’s range, the Age Defender and Facial Fuel lines are specially formulated to address men’s needs with specific treatments for managing pre- and post-shave skin.

Contrastingly, women’s skincare products are a little more complex when it comes to ingredient combinations, claims, and regimens. “Common across many women’s skincare products on the market are formulations that have richer textures and come in several formats – creams, gels, lotions, milks, emulsions, oils, jellies,” Dr. Ilaya explains. These are largely driven by women’s engagement in skincare, diversified preferences, the self-care role of skincare, and willingness to use multiple products to manage skin needs, she adds.

Robinson agrees that women’s products tend to be more segmented, as the women’s skincare category is so much bigger than the men’s. For example, many women’s ranges offer products for fine lines, wrinkles, firming, even skin tone, oil control, and extra hydration, while “men’s skincare might address only a few of those needs,” he says.

The difference between men’s & women’s skin

Are there differences between men’s and women’s skin? The short answer is yes.

“Male skin tends to be more sebaceous and have an increased density of hair follicles,” says dermatologist Rita Linkner, MD, of Spring Street Dermatology in New York City. “That means that men require active ingredients that are higher in concentration and formulations that are able to deliver active ingredients into skin that is oilier/more glabrous.” She says that gel-based cleansers are better for men as opposed to cream-based ones that are ideal for women for this reason.

As for body products, Dr. Linkner says there are even more differences in formulation — and for good reason. “Oil glands and hair follicles increase in size and density in a male, compared to a female,” she explains. Men also typically have more body hair, a higher density of sweat glands, and oilier skin, whereas the opposite is true for women, Dr. Ilaya adds. “The key to selecting body products is to address the skin’s needs and note texture preferences,” she says. “To manage men’s oily body skin, especially in the breakout- and ingrown hair-prone back and chest, Kiehl’s Body Fuel is ideal as it contains salicylic acid to address oily skin.”

Kiehl’s Crème de Corps, meanwhile, comes in different textures to appeal to both genders. “For men, opt for a lighter weight whipped version or dry body oil to help supplement skin moisture loss,” Dr. Ilaya suggests. Even though men tend to be oilier, it is still important that women moisturize to maintain a healthy moisture barrier. For women, Dr. Ilaya says that the rich texture of Crème de Corps Lotion nourishes skin post-shower and alleviates dryness that’s common among women.

Of course, men’s and women’s hormones vary, as well, which affects their skin respectively. “Male testosterone means men can be more body-acne prone and female estrogen means that skin quality and dryness changes with age, i.e., with menopause and pregnancy,” Dr. Linkner says. The result? Distinct product offerings. “Because of these differences, they require products that address their skin’s unique needs,” Dr. Ilaya says.

The difference between men’s & women’s hair

Most hair care products for men are, justifiably, focused on hair loss, Dr. Linkner says, adding that “women’s hair care products are only more recently catching onto this with female-pattern hair loss becoming demystified.” Robinson notes that men also tend to have shorter, thicker hair, so their styling needs may be different. “Men’s products tend to be lighter weight and fast-absorbing,” he says.

Similar to differences in hair product marketing, there are also differences in hair removal marketing. Robinson explains that because men shave their faces, they have a much larger category of products to address this, similar to the products on the market for women to use to shave their legs.

The takeaway

Though the targeted offerings vary in size and solutions based on the differences between men’s and women’s skin, Robinson admits that a lot does come down to marketing. “One major brand in particular was well known to offer the same formula for both men and women but packaged and marketed differently,” he says.

Of note, per the deodorant trend discussed above, the fragrances tend to vary among bodycare and haircare, as well. “Men’s products tend to have a more ‘masculine’ scent that typically is more woodsy or herbal,” he says. If the product is fragrance free, however, then it might appeal to both genders. Suncare, for example, is typically considered unisex (i.e. marketed to both genders).

Dr. Ilaya notes that while certain products are marketed for men or women, the majority of products are genderless. “Speaking with several consumers, it’s common knowledge that boyfriends, brothers, husbands ‘borrow’ skincare products from the women in their lives,” she says.

At the end of the day, good products speak for themselves. “The skincare category is flooded,” says Dr. Linkner. “The brands my patients are asking about are the ones holding true to their branding, regardless of price point.”

Tackling Life Threatening Conditions with Bariatric Treatment

Obesity is one of the biggest killers in the world today, motivating many of the obesely overweight to seek bariatric treatment such as a Sleeve Gastrectomy, or a Gastric Bypass.
Health conditions related to obesity include high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, joint problems, sleep apnoea and gall stones. So for many people, their extra weight is not only uncomfortable, but also life threatening.
If your BMI is 30 or more, you are in the obese range and if you’ve been struggling to lose weight then a sleeve gastrectomy could be an option. If your BMI is 45 or more, then a gastric bypass may be performed.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

A Sleeve Gastrectomy is primarily used as part of a staged approach to surgical weight loss, and may be followed by a Gastric Bypass.
Overview of Sleeve Gastrectomy:
• A sleeve gastrectomy takes up to two hours to complete.
• The surgeon will five or six small incisions in the abdomen and performs the procedure using a video camera (laparoscope) and long instruments that are placed through these small incisions.
• During the gastrectomy, about 75% of the stomach is removed leaving a narrow gastric “tube” or “sleeve”.
• The gastrectomy limits the amount of food that can be eaten at one time without decreasing absorption of nutrients. After eating a small amount of food, you will feel full very quickly and for several hours.

Gastric Bypass

In patients who undergo sleeve gastrectomy as a first stage procedure, the gastric bypass is performed 12 to 18 months later after significant weight loss has occurred and the risk of anaesthesia is much lower (and the liver has decreased in size).
Overview of Gastric Bypass
• Gastric bypass surgery is an operation that creates a small pouch to restrict food intake and bypasses a segment of the small intestine.
• The surgeon makes a direct connection from the stomach pouch to a lower segment of the small intestine, bypassing the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) and some of the jejunum (the second part of the small intestine), delaying the mixing of ingested food and the digestive enzymes.
• Because gastric bypass creates ‘dumping syndrome’ the patient is negatively reinforced with nausea, sweating, and a general ‘ill’ feeling shortly after they eat sweets or large amounts of carbohydrates. This helps reduce binging and limits high-carbohydrate foods.

If you have been struggling with your weight for a long time and tried various methods in the market with discouraging results then Bariatric treatment may be an option. The Taqtik Health Marketplace provides an online platform for people looking to travel for medical procedures, including Bariatric Treatments. A number of partners provide Bariatric packages including My Medical Vacations in Mexico, Quirónsalud in Spain, and Gorgeous Getaways in Malaysia.

Thread Lifting. The Non-Surgical Face Lift with NO Downtime!

A Thread Lift through VG Plastic Surgery South Korea can produce similar effects to a surgical face lift, without the down time. This procedure offers a great alternative for those who are not wanting to go under the knife for a younger looking face.
A thread lift is considered a minimally-invasive treatment, it does not involve cutting or stitching, however, it does involve injecting the thread underneath your skin to “lift” it up, creating the effect of pulling the skin back slightly and therefore tightening the face.

Benefits of Thread Lifting

Patients who undergo the Thread Lift procedure enjoy a more definitive V-shaped face with minimal effort and zero recovery time. This means that patients can go back to normal activities on the same day of the procedure.
Because the Thread Lift involves the use of threads, not surgery, there is no need for incisions and therefore no scarring. As the threads dissolve tissue elasticity is improved and regeneration is encouraged to create a smoother facial contour. Cell generation and collagen synthesis diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and enhances the V-line.
This method is simple, yet it’s effectiveness can be seen very quickly, making it a suitable treatment for those with busy lives.

Overview of Threading Procedure

Firstly, a numbing cream will be applied to the area that is meant to be treated. It takes up to 20 – 30 minutes for the numbing cream to take effect. The doctor will then mark out the positions of the threads to achieve the best possible results.
The doctor will begin by inserting a thick hollow needle into the facial skin, targeting under the fat layer. One end of the thread is carefully tied to firmer underlying internal structures while the other end goes underneath the skin.
As the surgeon withdraws the needle, the filaments on the sutures are deposited into the sagging parts of the face. The doctor then tugs on the threads to elevate droopy skin and sets it to a more youthful-looking position. The procedure is relatively simple and can be done in just an hour or less.

Top Ten Tips for your Cosmetic Surgery Holiday

Based on past client feedback and interviewing the surgeons, we detail 10 essential points to keep in mind before you travel on a surgery holiday!

DO have realistic expectations

The biggest factor that determines what you will look like after surgery is what you look like before!
We are all different, so the same surgery will look different for two different people, even if you are the same age, shape and size.
After a breast augmentation, the same size implant will look completely different in two different patients, as all nipples and chest shape and sizes are unique.
You cannot hope that your breasts will look like Scarlett Johansson and your butt will not look like Beyoncé’s! Judging yourself on others is just a recipe for disappointment and regret.
Do your homework, but be prepared for improvement, not perfection. Also remember that surgery will not change your life, that is up to you.

DON’T smoke!

Smoking promotes poor healing and bad scarring, so our surgeons recommend that you give up smoking completely for at least 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after surgery. You should not take Nicorette gum or nicotine patches either. The chance of developing keloid scars are greatly increased if you do smoke.

DON’T fall prey to the trends of new surgery methods

Plastic surgery methods are sophisticated now, and available the world over. Occasionally new names crop up for old methods, which are particularly favored by the more expensive surgeons at home to portray that they are inventors of new methods! More often than not, these ‘new’ methods are dressed up from traditional procedures, and all that has changed is the name! Beware of surgeons and websites that throw fancy words at you and then charge double!

DON’T feel pressured by the opinions of others

There should be only one reason that you are getting the surgery done – because YOU want to! Well-meaning friends and family will have their own comments, but don’t be swayed into or out of making a decision based on the opinions of others. People have surgery for a million reasons, but make sure that this is YOUR reason!

DO get your body into tip top condition before your holiday

A good diet and regular exercise in the weeks leading up to surgery can benefit healing and recovery. The goal is to get your body in optimal health, the blood and oxygen circulating. We have consistently found that the clients who are in good health and condition prior to surgery have the best healing and less obvious scarring in the months after surgery.
The measure of ideal body weight is BMI or Body Mass Index, which is a ratio of body weight in Kg to height in metres squared. Normal BMI is between 18 to 25. Candidates who are more than 15kg over the ideal body weight are not good candidates for cosmetic surgery such as liposuction or abdominoplasty, because these procedures are designed only for body sculpting and are not for weight reduction.
Surgery on overweight or obese patients will not achieve the goals and only result in patient dissatisfaction and higher chance of complications. Overweight patients should enter an exercise and diet regime to lose weight to near normal level and become suitable candidates.

DO get yourself some advice before you leave on wound/scar healing

Some scars can be treated with compression therapy, and some with topical creams. The creams are applied to reduce scarring and to speed up the healing process. Rose hip, aloe vera and some Vitamin E lotions have been found to help speed recovery. Massaging these creams helps soothe and soften the scars. The surgeon can also prescribe a specialized crème for reducing the appearance of scars. This must be applied morning and evening.

DO ensure you have a thorough consultation

The consultation is the most important part of the surgery, it is when you can ask all the questions that you have before the surgery. The surgeon will have as much time for you as you need, so use this time and don’t be shy to ask all the questions that you need.

DO cover up from the sun

Whatever treatment that you have, one thing is essential – keep all scars out of the sun! All good surgeons will advise you to do this – it is necessary for proper scar healing. Exposure to the harmful UV rays of the sun may damage the skin and lead to bad healing. So, bring your sunscreen and a good hat.

DON’T be afraid to ask questions!

Before you go, when you get to your destination, and after surgery, never hesitate to contact one of your team at TAQTIK to ask any questions. We will pass all medical questions to the surgeon and get back to you as soon as possible. We will be in touch with you after your holiday, we also like to ask if you can send across photos regularly so the surgeon can see wound healing and how the results are forming.

DO have fun!

Don’t forget to have a great holiday while you are recovering! There is plenty to do, as our team will show you, so take a bit of spare cash to make sure that you have a great holiday.
Pampering treatments, shopping trips, day trips, dinners and nights out are all possible, and can all be booked after your surgery, when you are feeling well. So make the most of your holiday – get some rest, get some fun nights in and out, and you will be feeling on top of the world when you arrive home!

A Face Lift Turns Back the Clock for 70-year-old Sandy

70-year-old Sandy came home to Australia from her surgical holiday as if from a time machine!

Sick and tired of looking worn out and drained, she embarked on a surgical journey that would take years off her face. Looking for international health care solutions she contacted the care team at Taqtik, who connected her with the right surgeon, destination and accommodation for her budget and surgical goals.

After her consultation Sandy choose to undergo multiple procedures- a full face lift, an upper and lower blepharoplasty and a sub-mental lipectomy with great results.

We asked Sandy to share her experience, and this is her story.

” Arriving at the huge airport I was met by a lovely man named Augustine. He was so very helpful to both my partner and I. He was an absolute gem of a man. He was really like a tour guide, explaining what everything was that we observed on our long journey to the Hotel.
He was always on time to pick me up for appointments at the hospital. He even took us on a tour of KL, to Vatu Caves, a site I really wanted to see.
If I lived in KL I’d want to have him as my personal driver. Such a pleasant man.
The Client Service Manager, Kumari, I just loved this lady. She was such a calming influence on me when I was admitted, and she was by my side when I was absolutely terrified of having the staples removed.
She was constantly in touch with me every day ensuring my wounds were healing and that all my needs were met. Another gem on your team. I will consider her a friend for life. She is such an empathic, caring lady and a very good nurse.
The staff at Beverley Wilshire hospital were amazing and very gentle people. They cared for me very well. As for Dr Nasir, well what a gentleman. I loved him, and I’m so very happy with the results of my facelift. I don’t feel like a 70-year-old anymore.
I would highly recommend Gorgeous Getaways to anyone wanting cosmetic surgery.
I would also recommend Lanson Place Ambassador Row where we stayed. My second time there. It was so well maintained, the food was great, the staff were very helpful and it was CHEAP! “

Why a face lift?

As we age, our facial skin loosens, and wrinkles and the muscles of the neck may weaken as well. Anything that can cause the skin to lose elasticity will hasten the ageing process, including sun exposure, weight fluctuations and heredity.
While a face lift cannot stop the aging process, it can often make a person appear to be a decade younger than their actual age.
Face lift Cosmetic Surgery can address these problems by firming and tightening the skin of the face and neck all in one step. It is most effective for the lower face (jowls and neck). A double chin can also be improved at the same time by a surgical procedure called submental lipectomy.
To get the best results for a facial rejuvenation, face lifts are frequently done in conjunction with other procedures such as upper eyelid blepharoplasty and lower eyelid blepharoplasty. Your surgeon may also recommend injections of cosmetic fillers for reducing fine lines, deep creases in your forehead or frown lines between your eyebrows.

Will a Face lift improve skin tone?

Contrary to popular opinion, the texture of the skin will not be changed by a face lift. Acne scars, age spots, fine lines and smoker’s creases will soon return to their original texture, no matter how tight the skin is pulled.
A face lift will not give someone beautiful skin unless they have beautiful skin to begin with. If you have a skin issue that you would like to improve, it may be worth considering a skin treatment such as laser resurfacing in combination with a facelift to improve the texture of the skin and smooth skin wrinkles.

Best candidates for a face lift

Both men and women have face lifts, with the best candidates being those whose face and neck has excess fat, lines and has begun to sag. The average age for patients is 40-50 years, but older patients have also had successful face lifts. In general, the best candidates for face lift are:

• People with good facial skin elasticity
• In good physical health
• Psychologically stable
• Non-smokers
• Wanting to improve the appearance of their face and neck
• Well informed in regard to the procedure’s outcome
• Having realistic expectations

And generally, have:

• A deep line, or fold, running from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth.
• Jowls, or loss of a well-defined jaw line associated with youthfulness.
• Deep wrinkles in the cheeks and sagging of the “highlight” areas of the cheekbones.
• Loose skin, wrinkles, vertical “cords” or excess fatty tissue in the neck.

Preparation for a face lift

Before you undergo a face lift, it is important for you to discuss any medical conditions that you have and tell your surgeon about any medications that you are taking. If your surgeon decides that you can have a face lift, discuss the procedure thoroughly with them before deciding if you want to go through with the procedure. You may still change your mind even after discussing the procedure with your surgeon.
Your consultation with the surgeon will give you a detailed understanding of the treatment – the extent of surgery, your health evaluation, your expectations and exactly where the areas of the face will be treated. When you are happy with what has been discussed, you will sign a booking form for the operation.
Your surgeon should be able to answer any questions that you have about face lifts including questions about what to expect during and after a face lift and the complications or problems that sometimes occur with face lifts. You may also take information from this website to your appointment to discuss with him.
You will have a physical evaluation of the areas to be treated. At this appointment you and your surgeon will discuss your goals, and last queries you have and finalize the plan for surgery. From this examination, he can determine the best procedure to use, and then explain it to you in detail, including the benefits and limitations. The surgeon may also recommend a combination of the face lift with eyelid blepharoplasty, browlift or submental liposuction, for a better facial profile.
It is important to stress the importance of not smoking before a face lift procedure. Smoking can cause problems with circulation and make complications more likely, including post-operative chest procedures.

Surgical Procedure

The classic facelift, or SMAS, is recommended by the surgeons. This is performed by making an incision at the temples behind the hairline. The incision typically extends downward, along the natural creases in the skin, in front or on the edge of the ear, in the crease of the ear lobe, and behind the ear. Making the incision in the natural creases helps hide scarring after surgery. The surgeon then separates the skin and muscles of the face from the deeper facial tissues.
In some cases, the skin is removed, in others the skin and muscle tissues are reshaped. The underlying muscle may be tightened with the skin, or separately. After the tightening or removal of excess skin, the skin is re-draped and sutured.

Face lift patients normally undergo general anaesthesia. Time in surgery is approximately 4 to 6 hours. In some cases, drainage tubes are left in place under certain areas of the skin for about 2 days to reduce post-surgical swelling. Depending upon the extent of the procedure, a face lift may be performed under local anaesthesia—while you are numbed and sedated, but awake, or a light general aesthetic, where you are lightly sleeping. You should discuss anaesthesia options with your plastic surgeon and the anaesthesiologist.

Recovery and Post-op care

After surgery, patients may experience moderate swelling of the eyelids and other facial areas. Immediately after surgery a large dressing is usually applied, but this will depend on which surgeon is doing the surgery as they all work differently. It is removed typically within 2 days after surgery and may be replaced with an elastic wrap. Any stitches will be removed after 6 days unless you have dissolving sutures. There is normally some discomfort following face lift surgery, which can be managed with medications.
You will be moving around in a couple of days, but we advise you to relax for a week or so. Strenuous activity should be avoided until the bruising and swelling has subsided. This can take four to six weeks; however, within two weeks the swelling should be reduced enough to engage in some social activities. Many patients prefer to delay significant social activities for four weeks after surgery.
The medical facilitator you choose through Taqtik will provide excellent post-care support, with follow-up visits and programs to assist your recovery. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know and we will schedule an appointment with the surgeon.
