FAQS: After Hair Transplant Surgery for Men

Here are some common questions and answers about recovering from hair transplant surgery. These will to help you recover quickly and completely. Of course, be sure to follow the advice of your doctor!

Can I drive after my hair transplant surgery?

Do not drive immediately after surgery. It is best to have someone drive you after your procedure as you may not be completely alert and ready to operate a vehicle or engage in other complicated or dangerous activities. Give yourself a few days to recover before getting behind the wheel of a car.

Will I have a bandage on my head after the procedure?

You will most likely have to wear a compression bandage on your head for several days. If so, make sure to keep it in place, clean and dry. Your doctor will give you instructions about when the bandage can be removed and whether you need to return to the clinic to have stitches removed or a check up to make sure you are healing properly.

Will the surgery interfere with my ability to get a good night’s sleep?

For a few days following the surgery, try sleeping in a semi-upright position. Use a few pillows or a wedge pillow to elevate your head. Sleeping in this position will keep the bandage in place and allow the grafts more time to take root without being dislodged.

How will my scalp feel after the treatment?

Immediately after the transplant surgery, your scalp may feel sore, slightly swollen, and uncomfortable. It is important to refrain from touching or picking at the hair grafts even if your scalp is itchy or sore. You have to give your hair grafts time to take root so avoid rubbing or touching your scalp.

How soon after the surgery can I wash my hair?

Your doctor will let you know when you can wash your hair either by hand or in the shower. Wait the required period of time after surgery before shampooing your scalp and hair. Keeping your scalp clean will help the healing process, remove dead skin, and encourage new hair growth.

What restrictions are there on my activities after the transplant procedure?

Your doctor will give you instructions about what you can and should not do immediately after the procedure. Refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking per your doctor’s instructions. Smoking restricts the flow of blood to the hair follicles and can slow the healing process.

Resume normal activity according to your doctor’s instructions. Refrain from sports and exercise for at least one week following surgery. Discuss your normal activities with your doctor so that you understand when you can return to your usual lifestyle.

Can I go outside after the transplant surgery?

Make sure to wear a hat when going out in the sun especially if your scalp is swollen, red or tender. You are at increased risk of sunburn if you expose your head to the sun too soon after surgery. Take your time and do not rush the healing process.

What should I do if I experience any medical problems after the procedure?

Contact your surgeon immediately if you experience bleeding, infection, severe pain, or any other complications after your surgery. If you have any questions about your recovery, contact your surgeon or medical doctor

How long will it take for my transplanted hair to start growing?

It may take between three to six months for new hair to grow as the hair grafts take root. With some care and patience on your part, you can ensure that your hair transplant is a success. Bring back the hairline and get lasting results with Hair Transplant Surgery.

Aftercare and recovery for men post hair transplant.

Recovering from a Hair Transplant

Aftercare and recovery for men post hair transplant directly effects the quality of results. Following transplant surgery, your scalp will most likely be sore and red. You may want to take leave from work to ensure a full recovery.

You may be described medications to ease discomfort and encourage recovery such as:
– Pain medication
– Antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection
– Anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling

Be sure to follow the directions for taking the medication properly to ensure its
effectiveness and help you to heal quickly.
Doctors may also prescribe hair growth medications like Minoxidil (more commonly known as Rogaine or Finasteride). These medicines help to slow or stop hair loss to the untreated areas of your scalp.
Transplanted hair tends to fall out two or three weeks after the transplant which is
completely normal. New hair growth pushes the transplanted hair out of the way. Regular hair growth should be noticeable between three to six months after surgery. The full results of your transplant should be visible within six to twelve months after treatment.

What happens when post hair transplant aftercare and recovery has finished

Hair that replaces the transplanted hair should continue to grow and fill in the spaces on your scalp. The density of the new hair growth will depend on factors that include:
– Whether your hair is curly or straight
– How loose your scalp is
– The density of the hair follicles that have been transplanted
It is important to discuss the expected outcome with your surgeon and develop realistic expectations.
To reduce the unpleasant after effects of the surgery follow your doctor’s
recommendations closely. Notify your healthcare provider if you experience any signs of infection or other health problems.

Risks and Complications

Hair transplants are generally low risk procedures, but like all invasive treatments, there are possible risks and complications.
Problems are unlikely to occur, but your surgeon will discuss individual risks to you. You need to contact your doctor if any of the following occur:
– Bleeding or infection
– Swelling of the scalp
– A scab or crust that forms on the areas of the scalp where hair was removed or
– Numbness or lack of sensation on the treated areas of the scalp
– Persistent itching especially during the healing process
– Inflammation or infection of the hair follicles also called folliculitis
– Sudden but typically temporary loss of the transplanted hair referred to as
shock loss
– Random tufts of hair that look out of place
If you experience any of these reactions, be sure to contact your surgeon or
medical doctor immediately.
