The Origins of In Vitro Fertilization

Patrizia Barrueco is a Partner Success Manager at TaqTik and works with leading healthcare providers in Spain to ensure TaqTik members receive top services, quality and pricing. Patrizia shares with us the origins of In vitro fertilisation (IVF) and the treatments available at Quironsalud in Madrid, Spain.

Dr Robert G. Edwards and Dr Patrick Steptoe opened a new era in medicine when they successfully fertilized a human egg, grew it briefly in a petri dish and transferred it into Leslie Brown’s uterus to produce a baby.
This revolutionary achievement enabled millions of infertile couples to conceive and women to have babies even after reaching menopause. Dr Edwards was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2010 for the development of IVF, while Dr Steptoe, who died in 1988, did not receive a share of the Nobel, as the prizes are not awarded posthumously.

As with many pioneers of science, Dr Edwards and Dr Steptoe achieved what they did despite a sceptical establishment and many vocal critics, some of whom believed that the idea of a ‘test tube baby’ was immoral.
Denied financial support from the government, the two investigators relied on private financing and conducted their experiments in a tiny laboratory at a small hospital outside Manchester, United Kingdom. It was there that they delivered the world’s first IVF baby, Louise Joy Brown, on 25 July 1978.

IVF works where other infertility treatments fail, increase chances of conception, and it can be used by anybody, you can use donated eggs and/or sperm. When you have control over timing, you increase your chances of having a healthy baby and decrease your chances of miscarriage. For women with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, IVF provides the best opportunity of having a child using their own eggs.

Step by step through an IVF cycle:

Step 1: Day one of your period (The first official day of your IVF treatment cycle is day one of your period)
Step 2: Stimulating your ovaries
Step 3: Egg retrieval
Step 4: The sperm
Step 5: Fertilization
Step 6: Embryo development
Stage 7: Embryo transfer
Step 8: The final blood test
John & Leslie Brown were a humble family who had been trying to conceive for 9 years and thanks to Dr. Edwards and Steptoe, their daughter Louise was born as “The Baby of the Century”. She is 41 years now and has written her memoirs:  Louise Brown, my life as the world’s first test tube baby (2015)

What is IVF treatment?
IVF is a treatment that seeks to bring eggs and sperm together in a laboratory setting to form embryos that can be transferred to the mother’s uterus. Eggs can be fertilized by conventional IVF, or through a process known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection.
When is it recommended?
  •  With your partner’s sperm -for women with moderate or severe endometriosis -failure of artificial insemination -for women with blocked fallopian tubes or adhesions -moderate-to-severe abnormalities in male partner
  • With sperm from a donor -single mother-to-be or two same-sex parents -repeated failure of insemination with sperm from a male partner -severe abnormalities in a male partner -repeated implantation failure
How effective is it?
  • ICSI fertilization has a similar effectiveness to IVF.
  • The rate of pregnancy obtained, which on average is over 50% per cycle, is largely dependent on the women’s age and the number of embryos transferred.
What does it involve?
  • Ovarian stimulation
  • Egg retrieval

  • Embryo transfer
  • Embryo vitrification
