Now that the New Year is here, many of us are starting to think about getting healthier. Diets will be started, and gyms will be full of new and eager members looking to get and stay in shape. Unfortunately for many, despite so much effort, many find it difficult to maintain long-term weight loss.
The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB)
The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB), (often referred to as laparoscopic gastric bypass) restricts food intake and decreases the absorption of food. It is one of the most common types of bariatric surgery and is performed usually when exercise and diet have not given long-term results, or when there are health issues.
The RYGB procedure helps to lose excess weight and also reduce the risk of various health diseases, including:
High blood pressure
Type 2 diabetes
Obstructive sleep apnea
About the Procedure
The RYGB involves making up to 6 small incisions in the abdomen through which a small scope connected to a video camera and surgical tools are inserted. The Bariatric Surgeon staples the top portion of the stomach so it is separated from the bottom to create a small stomach pouch, which restricts food intake. The jejunum, -a section of the small intestine, is then attached to the small stomach pouch allowing food to bypass the lower stomach, the duodenum. This bypass reduces malabsorption (the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs).
