Turkey has a long history of thermal water resources and is one of the leading destinations for thermal therapy, providing sophisticated services that promote the wonders of healing hot springs. Various minerals in hot spring water can address a broad range of health problems and provide significant help in medical treatment. Patrizia Barrueco from Taqtik explains more about the benefits of thermal hot springs with Istanbul Medikal Termal.
Origin of the thermal spa
The word ‘spa’ originates from the Latin sanus per aquam- ‘health through water’ a motto Greeks and then Romans took to heart with refined and impressive thermal facilities. Public bath houses were meant for relaxation, regeneration and healing. They were also an important center of social life, although not for everyone. Women and slaves were forbidden in bath houses!
Thermal water was utilized by many ancient civilizations including the Hittite, Roman, Byzantium and Ottoman empires. Ancient healing hot spring water therapy has evolved into contemporary-designed thermal resorts and spa centers in Turkey.
The curative effect of thermal water must be scientifically proven beyond doubt before it may be called healing or curative water. Thermal water begins as rainwater then seeps through the earth’s permeable rock layers. The water is then warmed due to the increasing proximity to the hot interior of the earth.
When water temperature reaches 20 degrees it becomes thermal, then on the way into the depths of the earth it accumulates trace-elements and minerals such as sodium chloride, carbon dioxide, sulphur, iodine, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and fluorine. Once it has completed this full process it is then considered mineral thermal water.
Thermal therapy or thermal medicine is applicable in the treatment of:
- Rheumatic diseases (digestive system, liver and gallbladder diseases, metabolic obesity, gout, kidney and ureter diseases, skin diseases)
- Conditions arising from orthopedic surgeries.
- Gynecologic diseases
- Convalescence-associated diseases.
Thermal water can be applied not only externally, but in treatment techniques, such as inhalation and steam rooms.
