What is proton therapy?
Proton therapy is an application of nuclear medicine, a type of external radio therapy that uses a proton beam to irradiate the tissue that has been affected by a tumor. Proton Therapy is the treatment of choice for many types of cancer, since its efficiency is equal to, or superior to conventional radiotherapy, and causes less side effects. As of today, over 130,000 patients have been treated with proton therapy at the 58 existing facilities throughout the world. It is expected that in 2020 there will be 125, over twice as many.
Benefits of proton therapy
The many benefits of proton-beam therapy include:
- Minimal or no radiation delivered to the area surrounding a tumor
- Lower total radiation dose per treatment
- Substantially decreased risk of secondary tumors
- Better quality of life
Madrid’s proton therapy center QuironSalud Medical Care Group
and leading Belgium proton therapy company IBA Iron Beam Applications, have built the first proton therapy center in Madrid, Spain. This center is at the disposal of patients from both public and private healthcare and it offers treatments for patients with cancer. It also serves a space for innovation and research, with projects that will seek to improve the results of the oncology treatments and the quality of life of their patients.
The most advanced and safest technique
Due to the physical properties of protons, proton beam therapy is currently the world’s most advanced and safest radiation therapy technique for certain tumors. When applied at specific dose levels, protons can act with great precision in the interior of tissue, thus increasing anti tumor activity and limiting damage to healthy tissue. As a result, proton-beam therapy used to treat a variety of cancers in a close proximity to critical structures in the body including:
- Eye and brain cancers
- Head and neck cancers
- Prostate cancers
- Liver cancers
- Lung cancers
- Breast cancers
- Pediatric cancers
Proteus One® Proteus One®
is a proton-beam therapy system that uses includes tumor-scanning technology enabling physicians to deliver the most appropriate radiation dose, and to target specific areas. The machine is equipped with highly sophisticated imaging equipment and can rotate 220° around the patient, allowing the beam to be aimed at a tumor from any angle. Learn more about the exclusive Proteus One® therapy system in this QuronSalud video.
