Are You a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?

Patrizia Barrueco is a Partner Success Manager at TaqTik and works with leading healthcare providers around the world to ensure TaqTik members receive top services, quality and pricing. Patrizia shares with us her knowledge of bariatric treatments in the Mexican Pacific.
Overweight or Obese?

Overweight and obese are classifications that can be defined as an abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that can be detrimental to health. The body mass index (BMI) is a simple indicator of the relationship between weight and height that is frequently used to identify overweight obesity in adults. It is calculated when you divide weight by height. The BMI definition from the World Health Organization (WHO) is as follows: a BMI equal to or greater than 25 is deemed overweight, BMI equal to or greater than 30 signifies obesity.

What causes excess weight and obesity?

The fundamental cause of excess weight and obesity is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and spent. In recent history, there has been an increase in the intake of hyper-caloric foods that are rich in fat, salt and sugar but poor in vitamins, minerals and other micro nutrients. There has also been a worldwide decline in physical activity as a result of an increasingly sedentary lifestyle.

Changes in eating habits and physical activity are often the result of environmental and social changes. The lack of support policies and development in sectors such as health, farming, transport, urban planning, environment, processing, food distribution and marketing and education are all contributors to this global issue.

What are the consequences of excess weight and obesity?

In 2012 cardiovascular diseases (mainly heart disease and stroke) were the main causes of death globally. Diseases like diabetes, disorders of the loco motor system (especially osteoarthritis) and some cancers (of the endometrium, breast and colon) are common risks associated with a high BMI.

Childhood obesity is associated with a higher probability of obesity, premature death and disability in adulthood. But in addition to these greater future risks, obese children suffer from respiratory distress, increased risk of fractures and hypertension and present early markers of cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and psychological effects.

What weight loss surgery is available?

There are three kinds of procedures that can help in weight loss- the gastric sleeve, gastric bypass and mini gastric bypass. If you are considering one of these procedures, there are excellent bariatric surgeons in the Mexican Pacific. Both Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos are great destinations with top level hospitals offering bariatric procedures. Clients often combine their surgery with a week long vacation! Explore the Malecon boardwalk in Puerto Vallarta Malecon, or the world-famous ‘Land’s End’ attraction in Los Cabos.

Tackling Life Threatening Conditions with Bariatric Treatment

Obesity is one of the biggest killers in the world today, motivating many of the obesely overweight to seek bariatric treatment such as a Sleeve Gastrectomy, or a Gastric Bypass.
Health conditions related to obesity include high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, joint problems, sleep apnoea and gall stones. So for many people, their extra weight is not only uncomfortable, but also life threatening.
If your BMI is 30 or more, you are in the obese range and if you’ve been struggling to lose weight then a sleeve gastrectomy could be an option. If your BMI is 45 or more, then a gastric bypass may be performed.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

A Sleeve Gastrectomy is primarily used as part of a staged approach to surgical weight loss, and may be followed by a Gastric Bypass.
Overview of Sleeve Gastrectomy:
• A sleeve gastrectomy takes up to two hours to complete.
• The surgeon will five or six small incisions in the abdomen and performs the procedure using a video camera (laparoscope) and long instruments that are placed through these small incisions.
• During the gastrectomy, about 75% of the stomach is removed leaving a narrow gastric “tube” or “sleeve”.
• The gastrectomy limits the amount of food that can be eaten at one time without decreasing absorption of nutrients. After eating a small amount of food, you will feel full very quickly and for several hours.

Gastric Bypass

In patients who undergo sleeve gastrectomy as a first stage procedure, the gastric bypass is performed 12 to 18 months later after significant weight loss has occurred and the risk of anaesthesia is much lower (and the liver has decreased in size).
Overview of Gastric Bypass
• Gastric bypass surgery is an operation that creates a small pouch to restrict food intake and bypasses a segment of the small intestine.
• The surgeon makes a direct connection from the stomach pouch to a lower segment of the small intestine, bypassing the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) and some of the jejunum (the second part of the small intestine), delaying the mixing of ingested food and the digestive enzymes.
• Because gastric bypass creates ‘dumping syndrome’ the patient is negatively reinforced with nausea, sweating, and a general ‘ill’ feeling shortly after they eat sweets or large amounts of carbohydrates. This helps reduce binging and limits high-carbohydrate foods.

If you have been struggling with your weight for a long time and tried various methods in the market with discouraging results then Bariatric treatment may be an option. The Taqtik Health Marketplace provides an online platform for people looking to travel for medical procedures, including Bariatric Treatments. A number of partners provide Bariatric packages including My Medical Vacations in Mexico, Quirónsalud in Spain, and Gorgeous Getaways in Malaysia.

Top Ten Tips for your Cosmetic Surgery Holiday

Based on past client feedback and interviewing the surgeons, we detail 10 essential points to keep in mind before you travel on a surgery holiday!

DO have realistic expectations

The biggest factor that determines what you will look like after surgery is what you look like before!
We are all different, so the same surgery will look different for two different people, even if you are the same age, shape and size.
After a breast augmentation, the same size implant will look completely different in two different patients, as all nipples and chest shape and sizes are unique.
You cannot hope that your breasts will look like Scarlett Johansson and your butt will not look like Beyoncé’s! Judging yourself on others is just a recipe for disappointment and regret.
Do your homework, but be prepared for improvement, not perfection. Also remember that surgery will not change your life, that is up to you.

DON’T smoke!

Smoking promotes poor healing and bad scarring, so our surgeons recommend that you give up smoking completely for at least 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after surgery. You should not take Nicorette gum or nicotine patches either. The chance of developing keloid scars are greatly increased if you do smoke.

DON’T fall prey to the trends of new surgery methods

Plastic surgery methods are sophisticated now, and available the world over. Occasionally new names crop up for old methods, which are particularly favored by the more expensive surgeons at home to portray that they are inventors of new methods! More often than not, these ‘new’ methods are dressed up from traditional procedures, and all that has changed is the name! Beware of surgeons and websites that throw fancy words at you and then charge double!

DON’T feel pressured by the opinions of others

There should be only one reason that you are getting the surgery done – because YOU want to! Well-meaning friends and family will have their own comments, but don’t be swayed into or out of making a decision based on the opinions of others. People have surgery for a million reasons, but make sure that this is YOUR reason!

DO get your body into tip top condition before your holiday

A good diet and regular exercise in the weeks leading up to surgery can benefit healing and recovery. The goal is to get your body in optimal health, the blood and oxygen circulating. We have consistently found that the clients who are in good health and condition prior to surgery have the best healing and less obvious scarring in the months after surgery.
The measure of ideal body weight is BMI or Body Mass Index, which is a ratio of body weight in Kg to height in metres squared. Normal BMI is between 18 to 25. Candidates who are more than 15kg over the ideal body weight are not good candidates for cosmetic surgery such as liposuction or abdominoplasty, because these procedures are designed only for body sculpting and are not for weight reduction.
Surgery on overweight or obese patients will not achieve the goals and only result in patient dissatisfaction and higher chance of complications. Overweight patients should enter an exercise and diet regime to lose weight to near normal level and become suitable candidates.

DO get yourself some advice before you leave on wound/scar healing

Some scars can be treated with compression therapy, and some with topical creams. The creams are applied to reduce scarring and to speed up the healing process. Rose hip, aloe vera and some Vitamin E lotions have been found to help speed recovery. Massaging these creams helps soothe and soften the scars. The surgeon can also prescribe a specialized crème for reducing the appearance of scars. This must be applied morning and evening.

DO ensure you have a thorough consultation

The consultation is the most important part of the surgery, it is when you can ask all the questions that you have before the surgery. The surgeon will have as much time for you as you need, so use this time and don’t be shy to ask all the questions that you need.

DO cover up from the sun

Whatever treatment that you have, one thing is essential – keep all scars out of the sun! All good surgeons will advise you to do this – it is necessary for proper scar healing. Exposure to the harmful UV rays of the sun may damage the skin and lead to bad healing. So, bring your sunscreen and a good hat.

DON’T be afraid to ask questions!

Before you go, when you get to your destination, and after surgery, never hesitate to contact one of your team at TAQTIK to ask any questions. We will pass all medical questions to the surgeon and get back to you as soon as possible. We will be in touch with you after your holiday, we also like to ask if you can send across photos regularly so the surgeon can see wound healing and how the results are forming.

DO have fun!

Don’t forget to have a great holiday while you are recovering! There is plenty to do, as our team will show you, so take a bit of spare cash to make sure that you have a great holiday.
Pampering treatments, shopping trips, day trips, dinners and nights out are all possible, and can all be booked after your surgery, when you are feeling well. So make the most of your holiday – get some rest, get some fun nights in and out, and you will be feeling on top of the world when you arrive home!

CoolSculpting- non surgical fat reduction

The leader in non-surgical fat reduction has emerged, and it is known as CoolSculpting. Liposuction has been the gold standard for removing unwanted, stubborn fat from your body. In recent years, technology has advanced and non-surgical options for ridding yourself of stubborn body fat have come to the forefront.

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a technique that uses controlled cooling to freeze and eliminate unwanted fat cells without surgery. It is FDA-cleared, safe, effective and is the world’s #1 non-invasive fat reduction procedure.

Who are the ideal candidates for CoolSculpting?

The procedure is specially designed for those who have unwanted fat that resists diet and exercise. Good candidates have noticeable bulges in certain areas of concern such as belly, love handles, arms, thighs, as well as under the chin.

How does CoolSculpting work and what to expect during the procedure?

The procedure is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction and works by crystallizing (freezing) fat cells which then die and are naturally processed and eliminated from the body. As the cooling begins, you will feel pressure and intense cold that quickly dissipates. During the procedure you may experience deep pulling, tugging, pinching, numbness or discomfort. The length of your session will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during your visit.

How long will it take to recover?

There are no needles, surgery, or downtime. Typical side effects following the procedure include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging and pain.

What are typical results?

You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. Your body will continue to flush out fat cells for up to four to six months after treatment. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good. However, additional sessions may be required in order to meet your goals.

Weight Loss Surgery in Malaysia

Medical travelers choose to have weight loss surgery in Malaysia for a variety of reasons, often medical. For patients struggling with obesity conditions, a sleeve gastrectomy can be an important ally for maintaining a healthy weight.

Malaysian hospitals can offer patients quality surgical services, for a fraction of the price they would pay in their own countries.

About Gastric Sleeve Surgery

  • The Gastric Sleeve is one of the newer and less invasive gastric reduction surgery options available.
  • A sleeve gastrectomy eliminates 85% of the stomach’s surface area. A smaller stomach allows you to feel fuller sooner.
  • A Laparoscopic camera helps the surgeon to make small incisions, which reduce recovery time and the possibility of scarring.
  • The Mayo Clinic reports that “the sleeve gastrectomy portion of surgery may be all that’s needed to lose sufficient weight”.
  • The Gastric Sleeve and other bariatric procedures are typically reserved for patients with a BMI of over 35. Talk to your doctor first to determine if the procedure is right for you.
